Lothar Matthaus says Leroy Sane can become the face of Bayern

Bayern Munich great Lothar Matthaus has said that Leroy Sane can become the face of the club. The Germany international found himself out-of-favour under Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola during the backend of the previous campaign and this has led to speculation whether he would remain committed to the Citizens.

Speaking to ESPN FC, Matthaus said that Bayern could be prepared to break their transfer record for the Germany international as they could pay as much as £72m. However, he added that the deal is entirely dependent on the player himself, who has yet to give the green light to a potential return to the Bundesliga.

He said:”I really think Bayern Munich [would] like to spend a lot of money, more than €80 million (£72m/$90m. In City he’s not happy in one way, and City is ready to give him up. But the main answer has to be from Leroy Sane. Does he like to come to Bayern Munich, yes or no? When he says yes, Bayern will contact Manchester City. And then he will be a big star in Germany, maybe the biggest face of German football in the last years because for the money that Bayern would like spend on him, he can be the new face of Bayern Munich.”

Sane was a regular figure under Guardiola during the opening half of the previous campaign but his fortunes changed after the turn of the year where he made just five league starts. Moreover, his gametime was also reduced in the Champions League and he managed just seven minutes during both legs of the Champions League quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur, which the Citizens lost on the away goal rule.

Manchester City are currently not looking at the prospect of offloading Sane from their ranks and the player likewise seems content with the current situation. Nonetheless, Bayern don’t seem to have given up on the attacker and they are hoping that the German would change the transfer stance towards the closing stages of the summer transfer window.
