Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack has said that Bayern Munich are the favourites to win the Champions League mainly because of the home advantage.
Ballack believes that the home advantage will provide Bayern Munich with an emotional advantage ahead of the Chelsea match. The Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Chelsea will be taking place on May 19.
Bayern Munich were one of the favourites to win the competition, but Chelsea’s presence in the final is certainly surprising given the way they have struggled in the league this season. Chelsea are currently sixth in the Premier league table, but they have managed to reach the final of the Champions League.
Chelsea produced a remarkable defensive display over two legs to beat Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate. This combined with many close shaves has meant that Chelsea’s presence in the final alone is certainly remarkable. A number of teams came close to eliminating Chelsea from the Champions League this season.
Valencia were the first to go close to eliminating them at the group stages itself, but Chelsea recovered to beat them 3-0. Napoli came extremely close to sending them out of the competition at the last 16 stage, but Chelsea produced a remarkable 4-1 victory at Stamford Bridge to get to the quarter-finals. However, Michael Ballack believes that Chelsea’s chances of winning the competition are extremely low.
“I think Barcelona would have been the only team capable of contesting a final abroad and winning it. It is a huge advantage when you are at home in a final, where a lot of emotions play a role. This is an emotional advantage that Chelsea cannot compensate for. I have my fingers crossed for both sides,” Ballack said ahead of the Champions League match. Ballack played in the 2008 Champions League final, in which Chelsea lost to Manchester United.
